A Norse goddess of the underworld, she was thought to be one of Loki's offspring along with Fenrir. She was cast down to Niflheim (the world of mist and ice) from were she was given power over the nine worlds and rulership of the dead, but this only included those who died a dishonorable death (sickness or old age, or any kind of non-warlike behaviour death), they were doomed to live in an icy, dark state of negative bliss, with her. Norsemen pictured Hel as a woman with half her body of a beautiful woman (or white and fresh) and the other side black and rotting like a corpse.

Chernobog is the enemy of Belobolg, the white god of light. although Chernobog and Belobolg rule over opposite domains - day and night, white and black, good and evil - they were initially friends who worked together to create the world from the mud at the bottom of the sea. They later became enemies, and after a long battle, Chernobog was thrown down to the earth and became a spirit of evil. Chernobog's ability to cause bad luck has led people to invoke his name when putting curses on others.
