Main article: Vetala

In Hindu mythology, the vetala are a very powerful type of preta that are depicted as having a very flaccid ears, head, and limbs that lack control or direction. They are violent and hostile spirits of the dead that are trapped between the world of the living and the after-life. As such, the only way to be rid of a vetala is to repel it with certain mantras or send it to the Netherworld by performing its funeral rites. The vetala will commonly haunt cemeteries where it will sometimes use demonic powers to take possession of corpses and attack humans to make its anger known. If a vetala is caused too much displeasure, it can drive people mad, cause miscarriages or kill children with its demonic powers. However they are also known to guard the villages where they reside as long as it is not caused too much grief. Because the vetala live between worlds and thus outside the laws of time, they also posses great knowledge of the past, present and future as well as a deep insight into the nature of humans. Because of this, they are often hunted by sorcerers who wish to capture and enslave them.

Main article: Kumbhanda

A Kumbh???a (Sanskrit) or Kumbha??a (P?li) is one of a group of dwarfish, misshapen spirits among the lesser deities of Buddhist mythology.

Kumbh???a was a dialectal form for "gourd", so they may get their name from being thought to resemble gourds in some way, e.g. in having big stomachs. But kumbh???a can also be interpreted as "pot-egg"; since "egg" (a??a) was a common euphemism for "testicle", the kumbh???as were imagined having testicles "as big as pots".

The terms kumbh???a and yak?a are sometimes used for the same person; yak?a in these cases is the more general term, including a variety of lower deities.

The kumbh???as are classed among the C?turmah?r?jikak?yika deities, and are subject to the Great King Vir??haka, Guardian of the South. One of their chiefs is called Kumbh?ra.
